Fifteen years running, Oblon Spivak has topped the list of law firms in getting U.S. utility patents granted, and, based on published application numbers, expects the streak to continue at least a few years longer.
Runner-up Sughrue Mion partner Dick C. Turner points out that there is some massage to number picking. "Sughrue was actually on top in 2004, but Oblon claimed to be number one because it had more utility patents. However, we had more when counting design patents."
The friendly rivalry between the top two firms may be spurred by the pride of Oblon founder Norman F. Oblon, who worked for Sughrue for more than 30 years.
Located in Alexandria Virginia, where the patent office moved to last year, Oblon has a tradition of hiring former patent examiners.

Another interesting number would be the ratio of granted patents per attorney/agent.
