Big 2G Deal
Finnish
cell phone maker Nokia has settled a
long-smoldering dispute with
InterDigital Communications over InterDigital's 2G TDMA patent portfolio,
and it only cost Nokia $253 million to put out the fire.
Legal maneuvers to be dropped: Nokia's appeal to the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals; Interdigital's arbitration demand before the International Chamber of Commerce; an InterDigital filing in the Southern District of New York to force Nokia to pay royalties; and a Nokia-initiated U.K. court battle to which InterDigital was preparing counter-claims.
InterDigital says it still has 3G-related GSM patents which it can press upon Nokia. Nokia, meanwhile still has its own 3G patent suit against InterDigital in Delaware. While there is still tempest potential between the two, negotiations are ongoing, and a further settlement is expected.
