Tuned In

Rembrandt Technologies sued 15 media companies for infringing patents related to HDTV and high-speed Internet standards. Defendants include Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, Time Warner, Adelphia, and Comcast. To the dismay of Rembrandt, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated the cases into a single suit (ruling). The cases had been spread from New York (2) to Delaware (6) to the Eastern District of Texas (7).

The cases involved nine patents that Rembrandt acquired from Paradyne, a former subsidiary of AT&T. Among the asserted patents are 5,243,627; 5,719,858; 4,937,819; and 5,852,631.

Rembrandt asserts that one set of the patents cover a portion of the American HDTV standard, another for a standard for high-speed Internet technology.

Rembrandt has had no luck trying to license the patents to the defendants.

ComCox brought the motion that resulted in consolidation in Delaware District Court.

Patent Hawk having lent a hand for the defense, patent validity is already in jeopardy. Any firms representing defendants wanting further invalidity prior art search, please contact Patent Hawk.
