Calling Card
An
Eastern Texas jury slapped AT&T with a tab of $156 million for willfully
infringing calling card patents owned by TGIP (Thank Goodness IP?). That tab
could be tripled by the court. As it is, the award ranks as one of the largest
by a jury in the district.
5,511,114 and 5,721,768 claim calling card activation, balance loading, and usage.
TGIP initially sued several others. MCI/Verizon settled on the second day of trial. By the time the verdict came down, only AT&T was left to clobber.
The $156 million was figured at 4% royalty multiplied by AT&T's $3.5 billion in infringing sales.
AT&T is expected to squeal like a stuck pig and appeal, while TGIP will wrangle for attorneys fees and "related compulsory future royalties."
