VoIP
As
Vonage is learning, VoIP is an acronym for "voice over intellectual property." After acquiring Digital Packet Licensing last year, which had its own patent
assertion going against Nortel Networks, Vonage unwisely let it continue. Slow on the
uptake from its expensive losses to
Verizon,
Sprint-Nextel and
AT&T, Vonage now faces
a counterclaim from Nortel.
"This particular suit is a countersuit so the original lawsuit that alleged patent infringement was filed by Vonage. This is a defensive maneuver on the part of Nortel," admitted Vonage spokesman Charler Sahner. Digital Packet Licensing filed its suit in 2004.
Advice for Vonage: get out of the patent game ASAP. Settle the Nortel matter ASAP. To do so, call Patent Hawk ASAP. You'll just be knocking on the door of the Nortel patent slaughterhouse. Put in your order for Nortel lamb chops today.
