When the Chips are Down

Tessara is putting the pressure on at the ITC and in district court against a bevy of chip makers and importers for infringing chip packaging patents. The move is, in part, an attempted counter against falling stock price, which has declined 5.4% over the last year.

The targets are mostly based in Taiwan and Japan, and include Powerchip Semiconductor, Elpida, Nanya, Acer and ProMos.

5,679,977; 6,133,627; 5,663,106; and 6,458,681 are being asserted in the Eastern District of Texas as well as the ITC.

Though the patents have been licensed before, including to Samsung and Micron, the action is expected to be hard fought, and the patents may not survive.

Even announcement of the action brought no cheer, with Tessara's Nasdaq listing dipping $1.07 to $38.04.
