IEEE has declared Microsoft numero uno in 2007, by a wide margin, for "adjusted pipeline power" software patenting. So-called pipeline power is a measure of patent count, technology range, and influence (patent citation by others).

I sat in on a phone interview yesterday with an agent regarding a Microsoft application. The "invention group" that came up with the disclosure sounded a lot like Intellectual Ventures. "What if" discussions with no actual software code being written.

2600examiner, you've hit the nail on the head. MS isn't innovating, just patenting. It's their business model.
(And MS is not alone when it comes to software patents issuing on code that has never been written - it's PTO policy to issue patents like these.)
